Sheila R. Johnson

Sheila Rae Johnson, age 83, of Bozeman, Mont., passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025. She was born on March 25, 1942, in Hettinger, N.D., to Leon Benjamin Tank and Judith Hilder Marie (Hagbom) Tank. Sheila was united in marriage to Kurt Arthur Johnson on Oct. 13, 1962, in Hettinger, N.D. After a beautiful life together, Kurt preceded her in death on June 5, 2017.


Throughout her life, Sheila lived in many places, including Hettinger, N.D., Helena, Mont., Missoula, Mont., Littleton, Colo., Mandan, N.D., Watford City, N.D., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Post Falls, Idaho, Rathdrum, Idaho, and ultimately Bozeman, Mont.
Sheila graduated from Hettinger High School and went on to have a distinguished career in various fields. She worked as a bookkeeper for several banks, Pepsi Cola in Missoula, Mont., and the Hayden, Idaho Regional Sewer Board for 15 years. She also worked in soil conservation for McKenzie County and was the business manager for McKenzie Co. School District. In addition, she and Kurt ran an auctioneering business, farmed, and shared a deep love of music and community.


Sheila was known for her selfless devotion to her family. As a loving mother, she cared for her parents, her children, and even raised nieces and nephews on the family farm. Her hobbies and interests included gardening, outdoor farming, canning, sewing, reading, baking, and traveling. Sheila was also an active member of her community, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a kind word.
She is survived by her children, Judi (Glenn) Overby of Kennewick, Wash., William (Melissa) Johnson of Arlington, Wash., RoAnn (Darrell) Williams of Hamilton, Mont., and Michelle (Wilbur) Douma of Bozeman, Mont.; sisters, Yvonne “Bonnie” Borgman and Arlyce Ross; brother Dennis (Charlene) Tank; sisters-in-law, Pam (Calvin) Haugan, Cecilia Tank, and Theresa Watkin; brother-in-law, Kent Johnson; as well as 13 grandchildren who were her pride and joy.


Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kurt; her brother, Doyne Tank; her brother-in-law, James Ross; her sisters-in-law, Berdena Krapu, Gladys Johnson and Addie Johnson; and her cousin, Gerald Watkins, who was raised as a brother.
Sheila was a woman of deep faith, professing her belief at Mandan, N.D. Convention in 1953 and remained faithful to God.
A Memorial Service was held on April 12, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service followed by a lunch reception at The Springs Living at Bozeman.
