Zachary Mulder
Zachary Michael Mulder, 42, of Maple Grove, Minn., passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 18, 2024, in Maple Grove, Minn., after a young life lived to its fullest.
Zack was born on Sept. 8, 1982, to Marty and Crystal Mulder in Williston, N,D. Being the firstborn, he was their pride and joy (and, to this day, his mom’s favorite). Four siblings followed in rapid succession - Lindsey, Amy, Bethany, and Nicholas - who became his band members, fort builders, and employees in his many money-making endeavors. They looked up to him in every way, and he made sure life at home was never boring.
From a young age, it was clear Zack was born to “have fun.” In fact, he included the word “fun” in every single prayer. He was a big fan of sports. His favorites to play were baseball, hockey, and golf. His allegiance to the Minnesota Vikings was obvious from the vibrant purple and yellow outfits he often wore. Zack would love to see a Super Bowl win this year. When he wasn’t playing sports, he was his dad’s best companion in all things outdoors. They shared many memorable experiences canoeing on both Missouri Rivers and in the Boundary Waters, camping in all forms of weather, and hunting and fishing the North Dakota wildlife. Zack loved going to the lake. Wakeboarding and snowboarding were always a yes for him. Growing up in a hotel, he was also forced to work a little and excelled at vacuuming hotel rooms and checking in guests.
Zack attended Johnson Corners Christian Academy from kindergarten until his graduation in 2001, keeping his teachers on their toes with his mischievous grin. He continued his education at a few different colleges before finding his career in the oilfields of North Dakota. As a direction driller, he strived to be the best, often setting records to beat. He made lifelong friends and found great purpose in his work.
In 2008, Zack married Marissa Mulder. Though their relationship wasn’t permanent, they were blessed with three beautiful daughters and remained friends.
Zack and Abby Mulder were united in marriage in 2021. He became step-dad to four more children. They enjoyed many adventures together as a family of seven. Abby was his partner in everything and his love until the end. Just two weeks ago, a baby girl was born into their family. Zack radiated joy and never wanted to leave her side.
Zack’s daughters, Brilee, Payton, Hadley, and Oakleigh were the highlights of his life. He loved attending their sporting events and taking them on dates to the nail salon. Fun was always on the agenda - whether it was trips to water parks, arcades, or other adventures. He worked hard to teach them to water ski, and they enjoyed their time at Pike Lake in the summer. He was immensely proud of each one of them.
Although Zack faced many struggles, he had a special connection with Jesus from a young age and always returned to his faith during tough times. God’s hand was evident throughout his life. Zack made friends wherever he went. If you were lucky enough to call him friend, he had your back for life.
Addiction is real and powerful. Zack worked hard to overcome it for most of his life. He was surrounded by support and always knew he was loved by so many. There is forever hope, even in the darkest of times. Zack would want everyone to know that and to keep on fighting - and having fun.
Zack’s memory will live on through his wife, Abby; daughters, Brilee, Payton, Hadley and Oakleigh; stepchildren Julian, Isabella, Hudson, and Jaxson; grandma, Jan; parents, Marty and Crystal Mulder; sister, Lindsey (Nick); sister, Amy (Brock); sister, Bethany (Kody); brother and best friend, Nicholas; fourteen nieces and nephews; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and countless friends. He is reunited in heaven with his grandpa, Michael; grandma, Sue; and grandpa, Don.
A memorial service was held at Watford City Assembly of God on Sept. 23, 2024, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at the church. Burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Maple Grove, Minn., on Sept. 25, 2024, at 3 p.m.
