The No. 3 Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn (W-N-G) Sioux defeated Alexander 54-16, in the second round of North Dakota’s 9-Man Football Playoffs last Saturday afternoon. The Comets earned this matchup with a 44-36 victory over Kenmare-Bowbells in the first round, and were looking for revenge after losing 68-0 to W-N-G in the regular season.
The Comets did not play their best football in the first six minutes and the Sioux took full advantage. Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn enjoyed great field position with the wind at their back for the first quarter. Outstanding senior quarterback, Walker Braaten, scored on 10-yard touchdown run with 8:19 left to get the scoring started. While the Comets were trying to punt, the snap went over the punter’s head and resulted in a W-N-G safety. That led to a short free kick and W-N-G’s ensuing drive started at the Comet 33-yard line. Daemian Braun scored on a 25-yard touchdown run and it was 18-0 Sioux with 5:33 left in the first quarter.
