Brandon Allex literally carried Watford City to a 26-13 win over the Dickinson Trinity Titans last Tuesday as he set two W.C.H.S. records.
Allex, Watford City’s 160-pound senior running back scored four touchdowns, while picking up 385 rushing yards on 55 carries, to set two new school records. During Tuesday night’s win, Allex broke the single game rushing yard record of 337 yards set in 1972 by Dennis Johnson and the school’s most carries in a game record of 44.
The game, which saw Watford City run 70 rushing plays, also broke the school’s former record of 64 rushing plays in one game.
“Allex had a huge night for us,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach. “Our running game was the key to the win as we ran off 70 running plays to Trinity’s 24. The only thing that the Wolves did wrong was having three turnovers.”
Allex’s two first half touchdowns came on runs of 13 and four yards, as the Wolves led the Titans, 14-0, at the half.
The big score of the game came on the first play after Dickinson closed the score to 14-6, when Allex went 69 yards for a touchdown to open the game up.
Allex closed out the Wolves’ scoring on a five-yard run. Trinity scored late for a final, 26-13, score.
“We played the run better than the pass,” stated Fridley. “Trinity only had two yards per carry.”
According to Fridley, the defense coached by Justin Johnsrud again had a very solid outing with Daniel Marmon, Beau Heiser, Aaron Bigelow, and Logan Fettig being the defensive leaders.
“We have to get something out of the passing game this next week,” says Fridley, as the Wolves prepare for their road trip to Beulah on Friday. “We expect that it will be a good game as the winner will be the third- seeded team in the West Region and the loser will be the fourth-seeded team in the playoffs.
The Wolves will take on Beulah at 7 p.m.
