Watford City’s boys golf team punched their ticket to the State Class B Boys Golf Tournament last Friday as the Wolves carded a team score of 344 to take third place at the Region 6 Golf Tournament.
The top three teams in the tournament qualified for the State Tournament which will be held June 1 and 2 at the CrossRoads Golf Course in Carrington.
“I was very excited for my golfers as they set a goal at the beginning of the season to make it to State as a team and they did,” stated Scott Wisness, boys’ head coach. “We were behind Stanley by 24 strokes at the Northwest Conference Meet last Monday. The boys knew that they all had to step up their game and be mentally prepared and they did.”
Lewis & Clark won the tournament with a 309, while Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood finished second with a 320.
Watford City was led by Nick Liebel who carded a two over par, 74, to take second place honors individually, while Chris Larsen fired an 84.
Other Watford City golfers’ scores were Colter Maki, 89; Mitchell Liebel, 97; Alex Hansen, 99; and Kalen Hartel, 115.
“We improved by 21 strokes at the Regional Tournament and were able to get the third place spot to qualify for State,” commented Wisness. “Now that we have accomplished that goal, we are looking forward to surprising some teams at State. With two juniors, two freshmen and two 8th graders making up the varsity, we have nothing to lose.”
Wisness believes that his team has the capability of having a very good showing at State this year.
“Liebel is one of the top golfers in the state and Larsen would have been in the top 10 in the region had he not gotten into some trouble on a couple of holes,” states Wisness. “Colter, Mitchell and Alex all have the potential to score in the low 80s on a good day.  If they all golf to their potential, we could be up there with the top teams in the state.”
