In their first outing of the season, the Watford City varsity boys golf team took second place at the Grenora Invitational last Tuesday at the Williston Municipal Golf Course.
Watford City fired a team score of 338 to trail Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, which won the tournament with a score of 325.
Rounding out the team scores were Lewis & Clark, 338; Stanley, 348; Des Lacs-Burlington, 372; Ray, 374; Tioga, 386; New Town-Parshall, 388; Kenmare, 390; Bowbells, 402; Divide County, 415; Powers Lake, 418; and Trinity Christian, 523.
Nick Liebel paced the Wolves with an 18-hole score of 80. Liebel carded a 36 on the front nine and then shot a 44 on the back.
“This was a good meet to see where we stand as all the teams in our region were there,” stated Scott Wisness, Watford City boys’ head golf coach. “MLS will be the team to beat. I was very happy to be up there right behind them, and even tied with Lewis & Clark.”
Rounding out the scoring for the Wolves was Chris Larsen, 83; Colter Maki, 83; Alex Hansen, 92; and Mitchell Liebel, 99.
“Chris Larsen and Colter Maki both had a great day with scores of 83 and Alex Hansen also did well coming off a hockey injury that has kept him limited in practice,” stated Wisness. “Mitchell Liebel struggled his first round with a 53, but improved to score a 46 on the back nine.  His score was important though as it won us the tiebreaker over Lewis & Clark to place second.”
This week, the boys varsity team will host the regional qualifier and then travel to New Town on Tuesday, May 10 for the Northwest Conference Tournament.
