Ready for Region

It’s all about getting athletes to peak at the right time. And for Greg Brown, Watford City cross country head coach, he believes his runners have done just that, and he is expecting to see some very good times turned in by his runners at the Regional Cross Country Meet in Parshall this Saturday.
“Our season is quickly running down,” states Brown. “We have Region on Saturday in Parshall at 1 p.m. and then we run a short, fast race in Killdeer on Tuesday before heading off to the State Cross Country Meet in Dickinson on Oct. 27.”
And all of the team’s hard work in the season is starting to pay big dividends as the season draws to a close.
This past Saturday, the Wolves competed at Rugby against some very solid competition. Brown definitely liked what he saw with the girls team taking fourth, while the boys team finished in eighth place.
Asha Smith, who has moved into the No. 1 slot in the Class B girls division, took first place with a time of 14:58, while Nicole Rasmussen finished 10th with a time of 16:07.
On the boys’ side, Guy Ross led the Wolves with a 16th place finish with a time of 18:15.
“I felt our athletes did extremely well in Rugby,” stated Brown. “This is a huge race with 160 varsity girls and 140 varsity boys at the meet. We saw what it is going to be like at State.”
Also placing for the Wolves varsity girls team was Addison Sundeen, 61, 17:42; Lea Arndt, 72, 17:53; Hayley Moe, 77, 17:56; and Kara Wold, 115, 18:57.
Finishing behind Ross in the boys varsity division was Dustin Kleppen, 36, 19:03; Logan Gumke, 50, 19:18; Michael Brown, 58, 19:44; Trevor Alveshere, 130, 22:55; Dakota Garmann, 131, 23:57; and Josh Segneri, 140, 26:24.
In the junior high boys division, the Wolves took fifth place with Devin Schmitz taking 11th with a time of 12:02, while Cale Bandelin finished 21st with a time of 12:43 with Hunter DeFoe coming in 35th with a time of 13:27.
