WC Girls Cross County take first at Fox Hills Invite

David Gumke
Special to The Farmer
“We had a great day to run at the Fox Hills Golf Course. The weather was very nice, and we had a good turnout of fans watching the runners. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make the meet a success. Thank you to our FFA students that came out to help and sport our team,” exclaimed Coach David Gumke.
The Wolves performed well on one of the toughest courses in the state, Ten runners place in the top 10 and receive awards.
The team is steadily improving because they are working hard in practice and doing all that they are being asked to do.
Katie Olson, who placed third in the meet, paced the girls to a first-place team finish. It has been a while since the team has placed first at a meet according to Coach Gumke. He says Katie is very excited to have enough girls this season to have a team score. She has been doing all the things that a captain should do to help these girls understand the effort that it takes to be a good runner.
“We want to say thank you to our seniors Katie Olson, Judah Mitchell, and James Odenbach for all their years of dedication to the sport of cross country and for what they have meant to our program. It was fun to be able to honor them with their parents at our home meet.”

Williston Chamberlin Invite
It was a cold windy day in Williston. The athletes had a hard time running uphill into a head wind. “We got a good race pace workout in, most times were not their best, but we still had some new personal records,” said Coach Gumke.
Tynlee Fahrman and Eden Ybarra took close to a minute off their previous best time from the Fox Hill race. Brooklynn Spotted Bear knocked about 13 seconds off her previous best. Kati Olson did her thing, and led the girls varsity again this week.
She is a very steady and dependable runner for the girls. The team had eight girls run in the varsity race on last Friday, and the coaching staff looks forward to watching them move up in the standings as they continue to work hard together.
The 6th grade girls won the meet. “As I said last week, we have a good group of 6th graders that are excited about running and are going to be fun to watch in the future,” said Coach Gumke.
Camryn Wagenecht won the girls 6th grade race followed by a pack of Wolves with Aries Chapman, Zoey Kendrick, and Hadlee Langerud in fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively.
Dehico Bocanegra Tovar continues to be the standard on the boys team. He is running very well in practice and meets and is close to being able to run a personal record time.
The next meet will be the Anderson/Stavin Invite on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Bismarck, at the McDowell Dam. Start time is 1 p.m.
