The Watford City Wolves Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country teams participated in the State Cross Country at the Parkhurst Recreation Area in Jamestown, on Saturday, Oct 25.
“We had an awesome state meet. The athletes ran very well despite the weather being cool and windy. We were able to come away with 5 personal best times and one All State performance,” said Coach David Gumke.
Dehico Bocanegra Tovar did not disappoint as he was able to place in the top 20 with a 12th place finish to receive All-State Honors. Dehico is the first boys team all-state runner since we have been in the Class A division (2018). Dehico will also continue his season and go run at the Nike Cross Country Regionals in Sioux Falls, S.D., on November 9. Dehico loves to run and train. He is very dedicated to running.
Jaden Suek ran well and was one of the runners to improve his best time. This was Jayden’s only year of cross country and the team needed him to have enough runners to score team points at the meets.
Judah Mitchell and James Odenbach are also seniors completing in their last season of high school cross country. Judah was consistently the number two runner on the team. He has had a great career running for the Wolves. “We are always sad to see our seniors go, but are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead for them,” Gumke said.
Jace Langerud and Dehico will be back next year. The coaches plan to work on recruiting some running mates for them. Dehico and Jace have already set the standard for hard work by their example this season.
On the girls’ side, Brooklynn Spotted Bear, Eden Ybarra, Philly McCoy, and Tynlee Fahrman all improved their personal best times. Brooklynn Spotted Bear showed what she is capable of by leading the girls team. She was followed closely by Eden Ybarra, who had a great season as the team’s number two runner all year long.
