Watford City earned the No. 4 seed from the AA West this year so they traveled to East No. 1 seed, Kindred. The Vikings defeated the Wolves 46-14 at Jerlow Field last Friday night to move on to the State Semifinals.
Kindred scored twice in the opening quarter on touchdown runs of 44 yards and three yards to build an early 13-0 lead. Watford City answered with an impressive drive going 10 plays, gaining 71 yards, taking 4:48 off the clock and scoring on a three-yard touchdown run by senior Jayden Waggoner. Trysten DeVries ran in the two-point conversion to get the Wolves within a 13-8 margin. Kindred’s explosive passing offense would get rolling for the rest of the first half as they scored 20 points in the final 6:36 of the second quarter. “We didn’t really do much of anything differently in the beginning,” said Watford City head coach, Jim Dooley. “Except for maybe trying to keep them off-balance with more formation/play variety and less continuity to start off. We kept it close early by playing hard, which we did the whole game.”
Kindred has had the best offense statistically in AA Football this year and they put it on display, especially in the second and third quarters of this matchup. “We had trouble stopping one passing play,” said Coach Dooley. “At first it was a scheme issue- which we fixed. Then it was a personnel issue...we don’t have anyone who is 6’5” and can jump like that.”
The Wolves got back on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Baylor Salas scored on a two-yard touchdown run to conclude the scoring.
