Young wrestling team to open season at Sidney Tourney

When the Watford City varsity wrestling team takes to the mat this weekend at the Sidney Wrestling Tournament, wrestling fans aren’t going to see the same powerhouse that they’ve seen in the past.
With just six returning wrestlers who saw varsity action last year, Nathan Brenna, Wolves’ head coach, acknowledges this is very much going to be a rebuilding year for Watford City’s wrestling program.
“We are short on the number of wrestlers who came out this season,” states Brenna. “But even though our numbers are short, we’ve got a good core of young wrestlers who will get better as they get more practice time.”
Returning this year for Brenna is Coleton Jore, a ninth grader at 113 pounds; Trevor Kalberer, a sophomore at 138 pounds; Gus Nelson, a senior at 145 pounds; Austin Garmann, a junior at 145 or 152 pounds; Joe Nelson, a junior at 145 or 152 pounds; and Kye Bolken, an eighth grader at 285 pounds.
“Kalberer will do very well this season,” stated Brenna. “And we expect to see good things from Joe and Gus Nelson, as well as Keegan Thompson.
Rounding out Brenna’s varsity roster is Thompson, a freshman at 160 or 170 pounds; Corey Jones, a senior at 180 pounds; Clay Jorgenson, a freshman at 120 or 126 pounds; Carson Hartwig, a sophomore at 120 or 126 pounds; Logan Gumke, a freshman at 106 pounds; and Jade Hepper, an eighth grader at 106 pounds.
