Watford City’s girls varsity softball team opened its 2014 home season on Saturday as the Wolves split with Bottineau. The Wolves won the first game, 13-6, and then fell to the Sioux, 7-6, in the second game.
Watford City 13, Bottineau 6
Watford City definitely had its bats going Saturday afternoon as the Wolves scored 13 runs on 13 hits to open their 2014 season with a big win over Bottineau.
After leading the Sioux, 4-2, after the first inning, the Wolves upped their lead to 5-2 at the end of the second inning.
But a huge seven-run third inning provided the Wolves the cushion that would carry Watford City to the win.
Tori Hopkins picked up the win on the mound for the Wolves as she gave up just six hits and four walks, while striking out 11 batters in the seven inning game.
At the plate, Hopkins went four of five including three singles and one triple, while scoring two runs for the Wolves. Tarynn Jacobson went three of four including a single, double and triple, while scoring two runs.
Bottineau 7, Watford City 6
For five innings, it looked like Watford City would pull off an opening series sweep of Bottineau as the Wolves led the Sioux, 6-3, going into the top of the sixth inning.
While the Wolves out-hit the Sioux, 9-7, in the game, Watford City’s bats went cold at the top of the sixth inning and Bottineau would answer with four runs to give the Sioux a 7-6 win.
Tori Hopkins took the loss on the mound for the Wolves as she gave up six runs including two home runs, while walking three batters and only striking out two Sioux hitters.
