7,440 barrels of magnesium chloride spills

On Friday, March 1, Dustbusters Enterprises, Inc. notified state agencies of a liquid magnesium chloride release from a tank failure located approximately four miles southeast of Alexander.
No definitive answers are known about the cause of the spill, but according to McKenzie County Emergency Manager Karolin Jappe there was a failure of one of the storage tanks that held the magnesium sulfide solution. The site that stored the magnesium sulfide solution had three large storage tanks, the third of which was added in the past year. For unknown reasons, that newest tank failed on Mar. 1, causing an estimated 7,440 barrels (312,480 gallons) of the chemical to spread across the local area.
