McKenzie County has been awarded $500,000 as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Brownfield Assessment Grant Program. The goal of this grant is to rehabilitate brownfields within the county so they can be utilized once again.
The EPA defines brownfields as property that may be compromised by pollutants, contaminants, or hazardous substances that inhibit the redevelopment or reuse of the land.
There are two general types of brownfields. The first is hazardous substances, which include buildings with asbestos or lead-based paint; former manufacturing and industrial sites; landfills, salvage yards, and illegal dumping sites; underutilized or vacant buildings; and mine-scarred land. The second type of brownfield is petroleum based. These include former gas stations and auto repair shops; former manufacturing and industrial sites, and old rail yards and truck yards.
