After 40 years of fighting fires and more, Knudtson shares insight

Although he may tell you otherwise, in the world of firefighting, Oscar Knudtson has been around long enough to see it all. With enough time in the industry to mark a legacy, he will still be the first to tell you that no matter how long you’ve been around, something done well is never a one-man show.
“They plugged me in as chief in 1981 and I was still pretty young for taking on that kind of responsibility,” says Knudtson, who joined Watford City Fire Department in 1976.
While it’s not necessarily anything that Knudtson says he did on his own to earn the title of fire chief at the age of 26, he says it’s always been a job that not many people want to commit to.
“It’s busy,” he says. “Being a firefighter is a commitment.”
