Residents of Alexander are experiencing disruptions in their mail service following the temporary closure of the local post office on January 21. The closure stems from safety concerns related to the building’s condition.
According to a recent alert from the United States Postal Service (USPS), as well as an update to the City of Alexander’s Facebook Page, the post office building, which the USPS leases, has reportedly suffered from ongoing maintenance issues. These problems, including issues with plumbing and heating, have led to the current closure and forced residents to seek alternative mail pickup locations.
City officials are actively working with postal authorities to mitigate the inconvenience for residents. Initially, mail pickup was directed to the Watford City Post Office. However, plans are underway to shift mail pickup to the Arnegard Post Office once necessary equipment is in place.
The Arnegard location will operate with adjusted hours to accommodate Alexander residents.
The city is also exploring the possibility of establishing temporary mailboxes within Alexander. This initiative aims to provide a more convenient local solution for residents, reducing the need for travel to neighboring towns. The USPS will ultimately determine the feasibility and placement of these temporary mailboxes.
The long-term future of the Alexander Post Office remains uncertain. The reopening of the facility hinges on addressing the existing building issues.
City officials have expressed their commitment to retaining postal services within Alexander and are actively engaged in discussions with the USPS to find a permanent solution. In the meantime, residents are urged to stay informed about updates regarding mail pickup locations and services.
The USPS offered the following details on its website on January 23: “Alexander Post Office, 602 Elk St., 58831 - Temporarily closed due to safety concerns.
