County okays $1.52 million for MCHS obstetrics unit

Twenty-five years after the last baby was delivered at the McKenzie County Hospital, the McKenzie County Healthcare Systems, Inc. (MCHS) is hoping to have its new birthing unit open and operational by November.
“We’re bucking a national trend,” Dan Kelly, MCHS Chief Executive Officer told the McKenzie County commissioners on Tuesday, June 3, as he requested $1.52 million to help fund a new C-section unit next to its obstetrics ward. “The trend is that many rural hospitals are closing. And those that are open are closing their obstetrics units. We are just one of five hospitals in the United States that is moving into obstetrics.”
