Judge rules in favor of Newfield in royalties case

Newfield Exploration will not be paying the state of North Dakota back royalty payments following a decision by Robin Schmidt, Northwest District Judge on Oct. 13.
The case centered around whether or not Newfield Exploration, along with 40 other oil companies, were improperly deducting the costs of transporting and purifying oil from their royalty payments to the North Dakota Department of Trust Lands. It was contended that those underpayments, which had been going on for decades, resulted in the state not receiving tens of millions of dollars in payments.
