The week before Halloween, areas of McKenzie County received over a foot of snow. This prompted McKenzie County Public School District No. 1 (MCPSD1) to call the first snow day of the school year.
The Farmer learned that the decision to have a snow day instead of a virtual learning day confused many parents, especially since the day before, students were in class and dismissed early in preparation for the oncoming storm.
The Farmer reached out to Superintendent Steve Holen to find out the reason behind the snow day decision.
First, Holen explained that virtual learning days were first made available by the legislature as an option to school districts in response to the pandemic. After the pandemic, virtual learning days were still allowed, in districts with a virtual learning day policy, in cases of weather or other circumstances of which holding school in session is not possible.
