“It shows that girls can be feminine but tough and helpful and have all sorts of sides to them,” says Jessie Veeder of her newly released book, Prairie Princess.
As an artist and musician born and raised in McKenzie County, as a young girl, Veeder says she dreamed of becoming a writer and a singer. But something else she dreamed of was being on the wide open space of the prairie.
“Ten years ago, I charged myself to do all the things on the ranch I did as a kid to sort of invigorate me,” she says. “And out of that came more music and writing.”
While the narrative of Prairie Princess depicts ranch living from a little girl’s perspective, Veeder says it became somewhat personal for her.
“I just wanted the little girl, me, to have a voice, to show people this life she loves so much,” she says.
