After living in Watford City for the past 7½ years, Jane Sergeant, originally from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, is now a U.S. citizen.
Sergeant was one of 121 people from 40 countries who became citizens on Wednesday, June 8, during ceremonies at North Dakota State University in Fargo.
“Five days after my birthday,” she says. “So it was a beautiful belated birthday gift. I had two years left on my green card and thought, it’s going to be the same price to renew my green card as it would to get my citizenship.”
When Sergeant realized the price to obtain a green card would soon go up, she says she wasted no time filling out the paperwork needed to submit for her citizenship.
“And I knew then, I’d be able to vote and you know, be with the rest of society,” she says.
