Hettinger County defeated the Alexander Comets 22-20 in the NDHSAA 9-Man Playoffs on Saturday afternoon. The setting was immaculate: sunny, 55° and calm, an enormous crowd and one of the most dramatic football games played this year. “I didn’t really know what to expect,” said Alexander Head Coach, Trey Jacobson. “I told the kids that the playoffs would be a new atmosphere, that we need to come out like it’s any other game, and not let the moment be too big. The buzz before the game definitely had a different feel as people started showing up, it was by far the biggest crowd we’ve experienced at a game in Alex since I’ve been here, which was awesome.”
The Hettinger County Huskies (formerly known as Mott-Regent-New England Wildfire) struck first with an impressive opening drive that covered 78 yards in 2:33 and ended with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. “Hettinger County came out and punched us in the mouth with their first drive, but our kids settled in and the dog fight began” described Coach Jacobson. “I don’t know if I’ve been apart of a game where two teams have been so evenly matched. It played out accordingly, where it came down to Hettinger County making one more play in overtime. I couldn’t have been more proud of our kids’ effort in the biggest game of their careers.”
