Jr Gold finishes the season with two players on the All-State team
The Watford City Oilers Jr. Gold won two and lost two in the State Tournament March 2-4. They beat the Dickinson Outlaws 8-2 on Thursday afternoon; lost to the Fargo Freeze 0-11 on Thursday night; beat the Minot Wolves 3-2 on Friday night; and lost to the Richland Rangers 0-5 on Saturday morning in the Consolation Championship.
The first round game for the Oilers started slow, playing almost 15 minutes before Rhylan Olson scored the first goal of the game. The Outlaws answered, making it 1-1 before Olson scored his second unassisted goal less than one minute later. In the second period, Masyn Strom scored two in a row, one assisted by Aidan Pelton, and one assisted by Gavin Wirtz. Olson then added to the lead scoring a hat trick goal shorthanded. The Outlaws scored their final goal of the game to end the second period 5-2. Wirtz started the third period off scoring a power play goal with assists from Olson and Carson Voll. Olson ended the scoring with two more in the third; the first assisted by Strom and Gavin McCauley, and the last unassisted. Garrett Fiedler was between the pipes for the Oilers and made 27 saves. Even though the Oilers got the win and advanced to the next round, they had a big loss when defenseman Cody Reeves broke his wrist.
