It was a great day for golf last Tuesday. But none of the Watford City Wolves varsity boys golf team could take advantage of the day to qualify for the State Golf Tournament as Watford City hosted the first state qualifying tournament of the season.
Golfers, who carded scores of 79 or lower during the qualifying tournament, were automatically qualified for the upcoming State Class B Golf Tournament.
“I think we were a little too overconfident on our home meet,” stated Scott Wisness, boys’ head coach. “We fell short of that today as Stanley had a good day and Kenmare, DLB and Ray were not too far behind. Hopefully, it’s an eye-opener for us.”
Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood won the tournament with a score of 322 while Lewis & Clark was second with a 323. Stanley took third with a team score of 343, while Watford City came in fourth with a score of 347.
Colter Maki paced Watford City with an 18-hole score of 82, while Mitchell Liebel finished with an 87. Also scoring for the Wolves was Alex Hansen, 88; Beau Heiser, 92; Charles Villanueva, 90; and Keegan Thompson, 95.
Watford City will also be hosting the Regional Tournament on May 18.
“Our goal is to place in the top three at the Regional Tournament and qualify for State,” says Wisness. “Everyone on the team will have to golf well to accomplish our goal.”
