Watford girls take 3rd at State Track Meet

It was a very good State Track Meet for the Watford City girls track team as the Wolves claimed three state individual titles en route to a third place team finish. The Watford City girls racked up 59 points during the two-day meet to trail Carrington and Langdon-Munich with 80 and 65.5 points, respectively.
“I am extremely proud on how our athletes performed this past season,” stated Greg Brown, girls’ head coach. “They set out to become the best athletes that they could and they worked hard the entire season, and it did pay off this last weekend. I could not be prouder of these athletes.”
And Brown has good reason to be proud of the way that the girls team competed at the State Track Meet. Not only did the girls team win third place at State, but three individuals, Asha Smith, Ricki Lindley and McKayla Haugberg, shattered four Watford City High School records this past weekend.
Smith, an eighth grader, in winning the State 3,200 meter run with a time of 11:34.00, broke the former school record of 11:44.05 set in 1987 by Janet Fish. Smith also broke the  school record of 5:20.60 set in 1987 by Janet Fish in the 1,600 meter run with a second place finish at State with a time of 5:18.37.
Lindley, also an eighth grader, set a new W.C.H.S. record in the triple jump with a State-winning leap of 36’1.75” to break Jessica Larson’s record of 36’0” set in 1996.
Haugeberg, a junior, tied Watford City High School’s pole vault record, which she had also set at the Northwest Region competition, with a vault of 10’9” to win this year’s State Class B title.
While Smith, Lindley and Haugeberg all claimed individual state titles and garnered the lion’s share of Watford City’s points at the State Class B Track Meet, it was truly a team effort that propelled the girls to a third place team finish.
In the 800 meter run, Kade Ross took fifth place, while Smith finished in seventh place. And in the long jump, Haugeberg and Lindley finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Haugeberg also finished in third place in the javelin.
Wrapping up the scoring for the Wolves’ girls team was the 1,600 and 3,200 meter relay teams with seventh place finishes. Members of the 1,600 meter relay team were Kara Langerud, Brianna Allex, Lea Arndt and Kade Ross, while members of the 3,200 meter relay team were Asha Smith, Addison Sundeen, Lea Arndt and Kade Ross.
On the boys side, only Shawn Fulwider placed for the Wolves with an eighth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.
