Watford City traveled to Hazen and earned a win in their first game of the year, by a final score of 32-16. Along with it being the first game of the year, it was also hot and windy which led to both teams’ depth and conditioning being tested. The Wolves beat the elements and the Bison, thanks in large part to a strong rushing attack. Five different players rushed the ball for Watford City and all of them ran for at least 50 yards.
“Overall, we executed well for a first game,” said first-year Watford City head coach, Jim Dooley. “The guys also did a nice job with some in-game adjustments. We are still in the early stages, but we are going in the right direction.”
Senior quarterback Paco Baldenegro ran for three touchdowns in the first half while the Wolves defense held Hazen scoreless. The Wolves’ first score came on the first drive of the game. It covered 70 yards on 12 plays in 5:36. All 12 plays were rushing, including an 11-yard touchdown run by Baldenegro. Josh Chavez added the two-point conversion to put the Wolves up 8-0. Watford City scored again with 2:52 left in the first half. Baldenegro rushed from 10 yards out and he ran in the two-point conversion himself to make it 16-0 Wolves.
