Double organ transplant gives new lease on life

“I wanted to give up, but I got through it,” says Janiel Pickering, of her double transplant of a kidney and a pancreas she received in 2020.
When Pickering was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at the age of 7, it came with the understanding that she would have lifelong health complications. But when her health eventually deteriorated to the point of kidney failure in her mid-50s, Pickering knew a double transplant was necessary. However, she didn’t realize how taxing the strenuous process would be on her body. Now, more than a year later, she’s still recovering and finally on the mend.
“When you get on the list, they tell you, you have to have your phone on you at all times,” says Pickering of being an organ donor recipient.
