Veterinarian Bruce Pedersen of the Watford City Veterinary Center has spent more than half of March last decade, deep in the Alaskan wilderness as a veterinarian for the internationally-known Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
This year marked the 50th year the race was held, and Pedersen was excited and honored to be a part of it.
“I really enjoy going up there and being part of the race. It is one of the most unique experiences and I just love doing it. I have lost track of how many times I have gone up, but I look forward to it every year,” Pedersen said.
Pedersen acts as one of the lifelines for the participants as they race to complete the nearly 1,000 miles of rugged terrain between Anchorage and Nome, Alaska. He is one of a team of veterinarians that checks the condition of the dogs as they pass through each checkpoint.
