Mental health issues lead to a higher chance of substance abuse

Did you know that mental health problems increase a person’s odds of struggling with substance abuse? Studies have shown a strong correlation between poor mental health and an increased susceptibility to substance use.
In fact, mental health challenges, including suicide ideation and substance use share the same risk and protective factors.
“If you look at our youth statistics, 1 in 5 have tried to commit suicide from our high school in Watford City compared to the rest of our state and youth across the nation,” says Miranda Figaro, McKenzie County Community Coalition grant coordinator.
