The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Department budget line of $225,000 for overtime raised some questions during the McKenzie County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
“How can we curb or minimize overtime?” asked Howdy Lawlar, commission chairman of McKenzie County Sheriff Matt Johansen. “How can we minimize that budget line item.”
More specifically, the commissioners wanted to know how one deputy could have 40 hours of overtime in the last pay period.
“Law enforcement is always going to have overtime no matter how many people we have,” stated Johansen. “When we have a car accident at 5:30 and someone gets off at 6, they aren’t going to get off at 6.”
