Watford City suffered their first loss of the season on Aug. 30, by a score of 26-6 at Devils Lake. Watford City’s rushing offense made some big plays, but were only able to finish one drive in the end zone. Their one score came with 2:58 left in the first half on a spectacular catch by Trysten DeVries. The touchdown reception came on a pass from Paco Baldenegro as the Wolves faced a fourth down at the 20-yard line. That completed a 12-play, 59-yard drive to cut the Devils Lake lead to 12-6. The Firebirds answered right back before the end of the half with a 9-play, 50-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass from Mason Palmer to his twin brother, Max.
Down 18-6, the Wolves got the ball to begin the second half and picked up one first down. The teams then traded punts, with Devils Lake having a field position advantage. They scored the final points of the game late in the third quarter with a 42-yard drive on a three-yard run by Bryar Exner.
